Aging Punx! Re-Live Your Fumbling Youth with this 1960 Valiant!

The mighty Road Toad! In the 1990s, Mopar A-bodies were a staple mode of transport in the Bay Area punk scene. Cheap-as-free, largely unrusted under the California sun, simple to work on, and boasting oodles of cred owing to a mention in the Circle Jerks’ cover of “Wild in the Streets”: “Got a ’64 Valiant, […]

McLaren Highlights From 2015 – Mission to Monterey: Video

2015 has been a helluva year for McLaren. The Brits not only launched the Sports Series, which includes the 570S and 540C as of this writing, the limited-edition 675LT, and the track-only P1 GTR, but also unleashed the 650S GT3, replacing the successful 12C GT3 on race tracks all over the world. Highlights for the year also included the “McLaren Mission Monterey”, an event during which a convoy of McLarens took the scenic route to Pebble Beach back in August.

With the year coming to a close, McLaren Automotive released a short film documenting the trip from Los Angeles to the Lodge at Pebble Beach, ahead of the famous Pebble Beach Concours events. More than a regular drive, the “Mission Monterey” gathered tens of McLaren enthusiasts driving anything from the MP4-12C, the brand’s first mass-produced sports car, to the bonkers P1. The event included a reception breakfast and midday “pit stop” lunch on the way, as well as a checkered flag finish line party in Pebble Beach.

The meeting also enabled McLaren drivers meet fellow owners and exchange opinions about their sports cars on top of enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the Pacific Coast. Not that you need an actual reason to buy a McLaren, but ownership does come with many interesting events if you live in the U.S., and the “Mission Monterey” is definitely one of them. Hit play to find out more.

WRC 2015 Season Highlights: Video

If you wanna talk about the World Rally Championship, you could sum up 2015 by saying Sebastien Ogier took home his third championship title, but you’d be skipping out on most of the excitement of an action-packed season. Alongside the Frenchman’s nearly flawless performance was drama of every sort, including the rise of young talent (Elfyn Evans), the brief return of a legend (Sebastien Loeb), and a truly epic three-way battle in Sweden. Of course, it’s difficult to fit all the thrills and spills of WRC 2015 into a single introductory paragraph, but if brevity is what you’re after, hit play for two and a half minutes of rally-style goodness.

You know the drill – spectacular natural scenery, sky-scraping high-speed jumps, expertly executed power slides, and jaw-dropping crashes. These are the things you can count on when it comes to professional rally racing, and WRC 2015 delivered as expected. Add some angles from the helicopter up top, and footage of AWD systems churning for traction down low, and you’ve got icing for that cake.

This is the kind of thing that gets me stoked for the upcoming season. WRC 2016 kicks off in Monte Carlo on January 22nd. Look for coverage right here on TopSpeed.

2015 TopSpeed Awards – Jayk's Picks

It doesn’t really matter what your automotive predilections may be – 2015 was a helluva year to love cars. Technological breakthroughs and developing social perceptions continue to transform the industry on an almost daily basis, and automakers are beginning to see the inherent opportunities of this transformation, rather than just the threat to the status quo. And while no one will deny the mounting pressure to evolve, the basics of what’s positive about cars remain. Icons change, expectations change, but that original kernel of what makes four-wheeled transport so fundamentally good continues onwards. The result, at least for folks like you and me, is some truly fantastic cars.

While I’d be happy to discuss the broad strokes of trends in the car world, my purpose here is different. I’m here to highlight 15 of the best new models on the road, whether they’re economical commuters, elegant SUVs, workhorse trucks, or exotic if-I-had-the-money fantasies. While I admit that my own tastes skew towards the lightweight, affordable, and fun-to-drive, I appreciate any vehicle that taps into that original kernel of goodness, no matter what the shell on top may look like.

Continue reading for my top picks for 2015.

After Delay, Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon Diesels Are Being Released to Dealers

These are tense times for automakers selling diesels in the United States. In the wake of Volkswagen’s emissions cheating, the EPA announced that it would be more stringent in its testing. All this happened just as GM was supposed to bring its first-ever mid-size diesel pickup to market in the fall. And sure enough, the […]

Ferrari 458 Speciale OnBoard Footage At Monza: Video

If you’ve ever taken a car to the track, regardless of what it is, you know that there is nothing better than those few minutes of negotiating turns and heavy acceleration. When it comes to track life, even someone taking out a BMW 2 Series or a slightly modified Honda Civic Si is lucky in my book. For those few minutes you’re focused on only one thing: your car and the track ahead.

In this video, I’ll go so far as to say the driver and passenger are extremely lucky. That’s not an understatement when you consider they are cruising around Monza in a Ferrari 458 Speciale. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know anyone with a 458 Speciale, and Monza isn’t exactly around the corner from my house either. Even still, I got to enjoy a few minutes at the track as I turned up my speakers and took the passenger’s place in the video.

That’s right – the passenger was nice enough to record the trip. And, I must say, the sound is absolutely amazing. Of course, I can tell the difference between a Ferrari seat and a computer chair, but it never hurts to pretend sometimes. That said, turn up your volume, hit play and maximize the screen. Enjoy the video!
